Fantasy NFL with KC Joyner

KC Joyner
  (4:00 PM)

Good afternoon! Let's talk some fantasy football!

Jamaal (KC)

Should my potential 2014 owners be worried about the concussion I suffered at the end of last season? Also, does it appear to you that Andy is already running me into the ground going into Year 2 of his regime.

KC Joyner
  (4:01 PM)

Every RB has durability concerns - it's par for the course. Reid is going to lean on Charles as heavily as possible but he's getting other weapons to lean on as well. Not too concerned about JC hitting the wall just yet.

Derrick (Garden City)

Hello KC, what kind of year do you expect from Eddie Lacy?

KC Joyner
  (4:01 PM)

Going to rank him in my top 5 this year. Expecting a strong RB1 season, even one that could challenge for top of the charts.

Rob (Frankfort, IL)

I made a trade in one of my keeper auction leagues and was wondering what you thought...I gave up Marshawn Lynch for Le'Veon Bell and Randall Cobb...Good move???

KC Joyner
  (4:03 PM)

Hate to say but not sold on it. Bell is going to be a workhorse and Lynch has some tread on the tires (although this contract issue is a concern). Biggest issue is Cobb's health, as he hasn't ever had a season with 1K snaps.

Adam (Montana)

Hay brother any news on when the fantasy football magazine comes out.

KC Joyner
  (4:03 PM)

Just got the word today - the ESPN Fantasy Football Magazine is due to hit newsstands on June 23. I penned the WR, QB and kicker sections this year, so please check it out and let me know what you think of it!

Michael (Oregon)

KC, how awesome was the segment when Rollins turned on The Shield? Fantastic way to bring him up like the did Orton 12 years ago. Anyway, would be comfortable with Spiller/Ellington/Cordarelle as RB1/RB2/Flex if you went WR, WR with first two picks?

KC Joyner
  (4:05 PM)

Rollins did a great job on his interview at RAW. A near perfect heel delivery. Got to like seeing new heel talents being developed. That trio is a bit risky but I'm really sold on Ellington.

Jalky (Dodgeville MI)

Do you have any concerns about Pep Hamilton's lame offense and how it will hold back his best player (Luck) from truly becoming an elite fantasy option? We're not at Stanford any more...

KC Joyner
  (4:06 PM)

Hamilton is consistent and isn't likely to open this offense up even with the new weapons the Colts have. Luck stays a good QB1 but falls short of great because of that.

Shawn (Detroit)

Is there any Raider that may be worth owning on the offensive side of the ball?

KC Joyner
  (4:07 PM)

Murray could be a good longshot pick. Jones has some WR4-WR5 value. Like Rivera as a longshot TE.

Mitch (Michigan)

Matt Schaub over/under 20 TD passes?

KC Joyner
  (4:07 PM)

Will take the over but only by 1.

Gray Hairs (Atlanta)

What is your take on Crabtree and Harvin this year? Can either be a low end WR1 in your opinion?

KC Joyner
  (4:07 PM)

Will be ranking Crabtree as a low-end WR1. Harvin gets WR2 status because of his long history of injury woes.

Rob (Frankfort, IL)

Thanks for your thoughts on that trade...I really wasn't sure if I should do it but Bell is only $9 and Cobb is $1...Also, before Cobb got hurt he was having a terrific season...I hope it's worth the risk...Lynch is $18 so that played a role in my decision...Also, I didn't have a lot of good options for my final keeper so that was the determining factor...

KC Joyner
  (4:08 PM)

It makes sense under those circumstances. If Cobb stays healthy, it's a good deal as long as there are starting RBs in place.

Max (Iowa)

Standard league with standard 200 dollar budget- keep Trent Richardson at 2 or Gronk at 11?

KC Joyner
  (4:09 PM)

Tough call. Would say Gronk because Richardson will be easier to replace (although he is on pace for a comeback season).

Will (TN)

KC you a fan of the World Cup? If so who do you like to win? What are your thoughts on having a top RB/WR or 2 top WRs from the same team? Do it if the offense is good enough ie Green Bay or Chicago?

KC Joyner
  (4:10 PM)

Can't say I know much about the World Cup. Was hoping to get in a bracket but didn't find any available with people I knew. Am OK with two WRs from the same team if the team will throw 125-150 passes to each over the course of the season.

Aggie (TX)

No World Cup for TFS?

KC Joyner
  (4:10 PM)

Will still watch some of it, if only to see how the US does.

Ryan [via mobile]

Which Victor Cruz do we see in 2014?

KC Joyner
  (4:11 PM)

Get some chips - there will plenty of salsa dances this year. Really like Cruz in the new NY offense.

John (Lexington, KY)

KC, am I silly to take TEs like J. Thomas and V. Davis before thinking about QB? Talking rounds 3-4

KC Joyner
  (4:12 PM)

The QB depth is incredible this year. Unless the goal is to take one of the elites with an early round pick, there is every reason to consider waiting until round 6 or 7 (or even later in some draft rooms) to take a QB.

Matt (Kansas City)

With a new O-coordinator, do you see anyone elite offensive FF players on the cowboys outside of Dez?

KC Joyner
  (4:12 PM)

Really like Williams upside.

Gray Hairs (Atlanta)

Better Fantasy QB......Ryan or Luck?

KC Joyner
  (4:13 PM)

Will have Luck rated higher. Just too many question marks for Ryan. Only a bit higher for Luck, though.

Dr. Aggie (TX)

Megatron>>>>>>Mike Wallace, just a reminder.

Doug (MI)

Megatron >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Wallace

KC Joyner
  (4:14 PM)

Consider this a segue for Wallace. He's apt to have a much better year under the Dolphins new system. Not saying he'll get to Megatron level but the number of greater than signs will likely have to be significantly reduced this year.

Ryan (NYC)

Fantasy keeper deadline coming up, in .5 ppr pick 3 - Julio, Ellington, Cobb, Cruz

KC Joyner
  (4:15 PM)

Four good players, so it's a tough call. Depends on your risk comfort level - if it is high, keep Cobb and drop Cruz. If it is low, keep Cruz and drop Cobb. Definitely keep Julio and Ellington.

Matt (Kansas City)

What area of the Cowboys defense needs the most improvement in order to realistically win the NFC East (they've lost it 3 years in a row on week 17)? The offense obvious can hang in a shoot out (ie Denver), but the defense was awful. Worried teams are going to be able to throw it at will against them

KC Joyner
  (4:16 PM)

Gap control and better tackling. Got to be able to shut down the run without doing extra things on defense. From a fantasy perspective, having a bad D could be a very good thing for those with Cowboys on their rosters. Especially considering they may be calling a lot more long passes this year.

Shawn (Detroit)

Better fantasy year...Mojo or D-Mac?

KC Joyner
  (4:17 PM)

Ugh. Would say Mojo but am not really sold on either.

John (maine) [via mobile]

Vereen (10th rd keeper) or romo (7th rd keeper)?

KC Joyner
  (4:17 PM)

Vereen, at least as long as you can get another QB similar to Romo.

Lane (Kukuihaele, HI)

Is Kaepernick worth all that $$$? Yes yes yes or no no no?

KC Joyner
  (4:19 PM)

They think he's a franchise QB and those are worth every penny. Having said this, check out Mike Sando's ESPN Insider article this week. He reviews whether Andy Dalton is worth big money and takes a very interesting look at the state of the QB labor market.

Ryan (NYC)

Thanks KC you're the man. Good luck in your fantasy pursuits this year.

KC Joyner
  (4:19 PM)

Same to you, Ryan!

Gray Hairs (Atlanta)

In a 10 team 5 keeper with a 1 point PPR..... Is Vereen a keeper or top fifty player in that format?

KC Joyner
  (4:20 PM)

Could see top 50. Keeper value is so-so, as any NE RB is always a risk.

Mr. Fuji (Japan)

How good can Jordy Nelson be in his contract year with a hopefully healthy Rodgers for a full season?

KC Joyner
  (4:21 PM)

Nelson's vertical numbers last year were great but his numbers altogether fell dramatically when Rodgers wasn't in the lineup. As long as AR stays healthy, Nelson will be a strong WR2 and possibly a WR1.

Will (TN)

KC have you been watching Fargo? In your opinion better draft style snake or auction? Or other?

KC Joyner
  (4:22 PM)

Only extra TV I've been watching is the NHL playoffs and some of the new John Oliver show (it's insanely funny). Am a fan of snake drafts because auction drafts vary too much between owner interest. Some owners are interested at some points and don't pay attention in others.

Miggy (Minson)

Yo KC! Who is the Eagle WR to own this year? Love the Chip Kelly offense but see him spreading it all over the place.....Who do I want?

KC Joyner
  (4:23 PM)

Shady is the obvious answer but don't shy away from Maclin. He outperformed Jackson on vertical passes two years ago.

Rob (Frankfort, IL)

Do you have the WWE network? If so I highly recommend watching the 1992 Royal Rumble...Ric Flair at his best with Bobby Heenan on commentary...Pure gold! Thoughts on Zac Stacy? Top 10 running back or sophomore slump?

KC Joyner
  (4:24 PM)

I do have WWE network. Am liking a lot of it but really want to see them incorporate more old school wrestling (e.g. Gordon Solie, Mid Atlantic, even early WWF weekly shows). Not entirely sold on Stacy. Low GBYPA and has some competition for carries.

Brooklyn Brawler (Brooklyn, NY)

What are your thoughts on James White's prospects in NE given Ridley's fumbling issues and Vereen being more of a receiving RB. NE after all has had the #1 rushing offense for RB the last 2 seasons.

KC Joyner
  (4:25 PM)

There is a long form answer here but the short form is there are multiple signs NE is going to lean on the run more often. White made an impact at Wisconsin and can do so in NE but it is going to depend on the carry division. Got to think he'll be like most NE RBs and have some really good days and days where he doesn't get the ball.

Ryan [via mobile]

Terrance West worth a late round pick?

KC Joyner
  (4:26 PM)

Absolutely. Got a much better chance than most long shots of having some significant value.

Wyatt family (Here)

KC..... we're here. Also, what sleeper RBs are you targeting late? Thanks

KC Joyner
  (4:27 PM)

Wyatts rule - the modern day version of the Freebirds. West is on the sleeper list, as is White. Really like Bryce Brown in Buffalo, think he could make an impact there.

Daniel (Indiana)

I have a draft in two months, what is the best way to prepare until draft day other than mock drafts?

KC Joyner
  (4:28 PM)

Read up on what the other fantasy owners are reading. Knowing the general consensus of the FFB prognostication community is a big plus for knowing where to value certain picks.

Pats Fan (Boston)

Keeper League question: Who is the 'unkept' man? Gronk, Julius Thomas, Jordy, Dez, Shady, Josh Gordon, Vereen, or Romo. No dollar amounts apply.

KC Joyner
  (4:29 PM)

Romo, at least as long as another QB of similar value is available (which should be the case for most leagues).

Eric (Green Bay)

Better strategy, keep one, Witten/G Olsen as TE1, Decker/G Tate as WR3?

KC Joyner
  (4:30 PM)

Not sold on Witten or Olsen. Really like Decker as a WR2-caliber player and Tate gives Detroit a huge vertical pass game boost.

Giant Gonzalez (Up There)

Hey KC, I think Dallas fans might be pleasantly surprised by Mr. Romo if he can stay healthy. I'm looking at him as a sleeper QB this year. What say you?

KC Joyner
  (4:31 PM)

Gonzalez's body suit was one of the worst gimmicks ever, but at least we remember it many years later. Romo has upside but he's 34, coming off a back injury and is on an offense that has plenty of players with durability issues of their own. A risky sleeper, if that makes sense.

Monty Python's Black Knight (it's just a flesh wound) (LA)

KC, keeper league question please help me decide 2 to keep from this, Arian Foster for 2nd round pick, RG3 for 11th, Percy Harvin for 9th, Knowsean for 14th. Thanks

KC Joyner
  (4:32 PM)

Python rules! Keep Foster and RG3. Griffin could be back to 2012 form this year. Harvin is an injury risk and Knowshon will be less productive in Miami.

Gray Hairs (Atlanta)

Can you see Foster putting up top 5 numbers this year?

KC Joyner
  (4:33 PM)

Yes, but wouldn't count on it. He's a volume back, as he's never done well in the GBYPA metric. Wouldn't mind having him as a starting RB but wouldn't take him over guys like AP, McCoy, Charles, Forte or Lacy.

Eric (Green Bay)

Garcon and Cruz are both potentially available as trade targets in keeper league. Would you be willing to give more for either or are they similar? Thanks

KC Joyner
  (4:35 PM)

Garcon has been a workhorse WR and that will generally continue, as Jackson will be Washington's deep threat. Cruz is more apt to be more of a downfield threat, as the Giants are going to use him both on the outside and in the slot. Would probably pay a slightly higher price for Cruz but truth be told the asking price should be pretty similar for both.

Bo Dallas (Parts Unknown)

KC, are you a BO-liever, and do you have any QBs that you think will outperform their draft position?

KC Joyner
  (4:36 PM)

He's certainly entertaining. And the WWE is having fun showing us he's kind of out of shape (although they did less of that on RAW). Can't see him being a main event guy but it should be fun to see how his character progresses. QBs that will outperform include Brady, RG3 and Foles.

Nick (Roseville)

Rank these keeper options please. 10-team PPR. Shane Vereen (6th rd), CJ Spiller (7th rd) and Ben Tate (10th rd).

KC Joyner
  (4:37 PM)

Would rank them in that order - Vereen, Spiller and Tate.

Lane (Kukuihaele, HI)

Are you a BO-LIEVER in Tom Brady being a top 5 QB?

KC Joyner
  (4:38 PM)

For fantasy, no but he'll be close. For the NFL, yes but not by much. I started noting signs of his decline right after the 2012 AFC Championship game.

Wesley (CA)

Who is gonna get the fantasy yards for the Browns? They're all terrible, but someone's gotta do something, right? Cameron? Burleson?

KC Joyner
  (4:40 PM)

That's a bad sign when the best someone can say about a club is someone has to get the yards! Don't forget Tate. And Manziel could be a QB2 and possibly QB1 candidate if he can win and keep the job (which is far from a given).

Kyle (Chantilly)

Do you see Kendall Wright's TD numbers increasing? He caught tons of passes but hardly did anything in the red zone

KC Joyner
  (4:41 PM)

With Sankey around, the red zone chances might drop even more. Like a lot of thing about Wright's game but am not sold he's going to have a breakout year.

Eric (Green Bay)

You seem high on RJennings and GTate this year. Please rank flex options R Jennings, Garcon, Cruz, G Tate for this season. Thanks

KC Joyner
  (4:42 PM)

Would rank them Jennings, Cruz, Garcon, Tate. But the value difference between Cruz and Tate isn't that great.

Iron Sheik (None of your business)

KC,Follow-on to the Foster question...drafting in the back end of a 12-team non-PPR redraft league...would you take Foster at 11 or 12 as your RB1?

KC Joyner
  (4:43 PM)

Glad to see the Iron Sheik name wasn't followed with an expletive. That man is a World Champion at cursing. Would be glad to take Foster at 11 or 12, assuming the aforementioned top 5 weren't on the board.

Will (TN)

KC as always thanks for doing these chats, always look forward to them. Anyone right now that you're going to reach to have on your team, and on the flip side who are you almost certain to avoid?

KC Joyner
  (4:45 PM)

Am really glad to see fantasy season start closing in - have missed doing these chats! Will consider reaching for Brees in round one - he may be on the verge of having a 2013 Peyton caliber season. For someone to avoid, would say Jordan Reed - way too many injuries.

V-Unit (Twin Cities)

Is there ANYONE worth taking in a FF draft that is on the Jets (sans defense)? I'm unrealistically optimistic for the year, but I would like some validation

KC Joyner
  (4:48 PM)

Am sold on Decker as a WR2. More sold on CJ than most. And Vick could be a very good spot starter under the right circumstances. Not saying this platoon is chock full of quality prospects but there are some players worth considering.

Vikram (EY)

For TEs this year it seems like if you don't get a top 5 guy you can wait till the later rounds. Does that ring true? Best.

KC Joyner
  (4:48 PM)

Would thoroughly agree. Get a great TE or go ahead and wait. And consider Eric Ebron as a late round pick with upside.

Daniel (Lexington,KY)

KCJ, my man! What are your thoughts on Cordarrelle Patterson this year?

KC Joyner
  (4:50 PM)

Hey there. Got him pegged as a risky WR3. Like what he can do, like the scheme, am not so sold on the QB. Other item of note - some questions now have to be answered on Twitter or via email.

Eric (Green Bay)

Great info today, KC. Thanks. Thoughts on value of trading Josh Gordon / Ray Rice prior to discipline being handed down or awaiting results?

KC Joyner
  (4:51 PM)

Hey, more than glad to help! Gordon's recent off-field issues probably mean he'll be out for the year, but taking him as a mid-draft risk/reward pick isn't a bad idea as long as the rest of the WR corps is filled with durable, consistent players. Not so sold on Rice, not because of the off-field issues but because he looks like a player who has hit the performance wall.

Eric (D.C.)

Who do you think has a bigger fantasy impact this year... Odell Beckham or Rueben Randle?

KC Joyner
  (4:52 PM)

Beckham. He can contribute in the passing game and on special teams.

Kyle (Pa)

Can keep two of these four in the 11th and 12th rnd in 1 pt ppr league. Julio, AFoster, Doug Martin, Percy Harvin. Whose the picks?

KC Joyner
  (4:53 PM)

Julio is one pick. Would say keep Martin over Foster if only because he's more apt to give more long-term value after the 2014 season.

Lane (Kukuihaele, HI)

There was a lot of negative comments on Johnny Football being drafted by the San Diego Padres. Wasn't Russell Wilson drafted by the Texas Rangers? Is that publicity good or bad for the Browns?

KC Joyner
  (4:54 PM)

Take would be this - Cleveland needs a QB, not a publicity stunt. Great to see Manziel get some additional publicity but it would be even better to hear that he is on pace to take over the starting role, which isn't the case as of this moment.

Gray Hairs (Atlanta)

Would you be OK with Maclin as your #1 wr if your backs were AP, Foster, Bell and QB is Peyton? Or would trade a RB?

KC Joyner
  (4:56 PM)

Would be OK with Maclin as a WR1 but would aim to get really strong WR2 and WR3 candidates. It isn't a bad idea to take a platoon approach to the WR1-WR3 positions if a team can stockpile the right personnel for those roles.

Tim (Tennessee)

10 team, PPR keeper league. Complicated trade offer, but basically I?d end up with Crabtree and the 23rd or C Patterson and the 17th pick. Which package do you prefer?

KC Joyner
  (4:57 PM)

Crabtree & 23rd pick. Less risk and the difference in pick value isn't great enough to make the Patterson pick worth the risk.

Jalky (Dodgeville MI)

What level of concern do you have with the uninspiring, and I'm being polite, Pep Hamilton offense and how it will continue to hold back his best player (Luck) from cementing himself as an elite fantasy option when he could be utilizing the other best players (TY, Reggie, Hakeem, Da'Rick, Lavon, Donte, Dwayne, Coby) on the team instead of playing the Colts' weakness (running)?

KC Joyner
  (4:58 PM)

Dodgeville - don't know where that is on the mitten. Will have to look that up. Agree that Hamilton's offense does place a ceiling on Luck's value. But will say the expectation here is that the Colts running game will be a lot better in 2014.

KC Joyner
  (5:01 PM)

It's been a really interesting hour of questions, so many thanks to everyone for taking the time to write in. Quick note before heading out - feel free to send fantasy football questions to my Twitter account, which is @KCJoynerTFS. Links to all of the TFS ESPN Insider articles are posted there as well as many other notable items (TFS related and otherwise). Thanks again and I hope to see you all here next week!
