Fantasy Injuries with Stephania Bell

Good morning - A little trouble with the remote internet connection - hopefully it will now stay connected for the remainder of the session. On to your questions!

Jimbo (Philly)

Looks like Liriano might be back soon. Are you reading it that way too?

stephania bell
  (1:11 PM)

Jimbo: Things certainly sound encouraging. He might be cleared to play catch by today. If that goes well, a bullpen could be in his near future. Maybe a return within a couple weeks? Presumes no setbacks of course.

Jase (Mahopac, NY)

What is the latest on Wainwright's elbow? DL stint or surgery looming?

stephania bell
  (1:14 PM)

Jase: Not either of those, hopefully. The team has suggested Wainwright would only miss one start and should return this weekend (likely Saturday). Imagine that could change if he still has some soreness later in the week but from the sounds of it, short-term issue.

Uncle (Sam)

World Cup Question! Any news on Jozy Altidore injury? How long can a hammy keep him out?? How soon can we see him back?

stephania bell
  (1:18 PM)

Sam: He is having further evaluation today which I take to mean some form of imaging. The range depending on the degree of injury could be one week to multiple weeks. The context changes because of the World Cup and the question becomes whencan he return and be effective and be at minimal risk of re-injury. Delicate balance. Imagine he's not likely to play again in group play. Maybe sometime after a couple weeks if healing well but will still be risky and not likely full strength (assuming a strain of moderate severity).

BTW, apologies folks for the slow internet connection I'm dealing with here at a remote location.

Heather (Fla.)

Stephania I saw where N.Walker was doing some running now. Will he come off DL on time? Thanks

stephania bell
  (1:26 PM)

Heather: Definitely a good sign as he's starting to work his CV fitness post-surgery. But he still is likely a ways off from swinging a bat or doing more aggressive activity as far as his core goes. The team hasn't said much but I would still anticipate he's at least a week away.

Matt Williams (DC)

When will I get Harper back in my lineup?

stephania bell
  (1:30 PM)

Maatt: Nats manager Matt Williams has been hinting at July 1 for some time. I've been suggesting post-ASB to be conservative. He has to test the thumb with swings (remember that's when Josh Hamilton bruised his thumb when he got jammed during a rehab at-bat and his timetable got pushed back). If he beats the ASB by a few games, terrific. But I'm not counting on him before then.

Brandon (Simi Valley, CA)

Any new news on Trumbo?

stephania bell
  (1:32 PM)

Brandon: Probably still a month or so away. The stress fracture has reportedly shown good signs of healing but they have to add activity slowly to avoid going backwards. He's swinging a bat in BP but that's a long way from running the bases, running in the outfield...the things that would really stress his foot. Factor in a running progression and some rehab games and I'm allowing a month or so.

Jake [via mobile]

Didn't Carl Crawford have TJ surgery? How does that recovery time compare to Wieters'?

stephania bell
  (1:34 PM)

Jake: He did. Good memory. And he did fine as far as the recovery from the procedure itself. But the demands on a catcher's arm ni terms of repetitive throwing are much higher than other non-pitchers so expect him to go a little more slowly. I think that was partially the impetus for doing the surgery now. He was beginning to run up against the clock for the start of next season.

Adam (NY)

Any Ryan Zimmerman shoulder news? He's been playing terribly at bat, could it be a shoulder issue or just rust/he's not very good any more?

stephania bell
  (1:40 PM)

Adam: I think you have to allow for the fact that he's both coming off surgery for his thumb and he's been adjusting to a position he never played before. The shoulder was enough of a problem to move him from third base but he's still moving around (between first and outfield) and getting re-acclimated to playing again after being out for over a month.

Randy (San Francisco)

Hello fellow Giants fan! What is happening with Cuddyer? Is he worth holding on to or is he drop worthy?

stephania bell
  (1:43 PM)

Randy: Well, hello! I would drop him. It will be aprrox six weeks just to let the fracture heal during which time he can't do anything to jar his shoulder (arm in a sling right now). That means a longer recovery just to get fitness ready for games, not to mention trying to restore your swing. Better to move along.

Shaun (Charlotte)

W.Ramos due back soon?

stephania bell
  (1:45 PM)

Shaun: If the running activities go well this week, then he could return when eligible off the DL, so likely near the end of June. Seems as the move was largely precautionary given his particular history so hopefully that's the case.

Stuart (Brooklyn, NY)

When do we see Brandon Belt back? I look forward to seeing you once again on Fantasy Football Now this season. Thanks!

stephania bell
  (1:54 PM)

Stuart: Sorry - ugh - dropped connection again - -but thank you! Preseason shows just 2 months away. Belt I think is likely going to reappear around the first of July. Takes a little bit to get comfortable swingin the bat again post-thumb fracture and he is just out of his cast a week now.

Hey folks, Stephania's on the road today and her internet connection was not up to par. She sends her apologies. We may try to reschedule her for Wednesday. Stay tuned.

Stephania will be back Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET/noon PT to chat! Send in those questions.

stephania bell
  (3:06 PM)

Greetings - and apologies to those who suffered through my internet challenges yesterday. Back today for the next half hour to get to some more questions...

Willem (Haarlem, Netherlands)

Do you expect the appendectomy will cause Walker to have problems when he returns? In my time it was done under full narcosis with an abdominal incision, but I have read it is less invasive nowadays.

stephania bell
  (3:10 PM)

Hello Willem: Thanks for chatting from overseas! Sometimes it takes guys a week or so to get their full power behind their swing back but he shouldn't have any future problems. And yes, much less invasive nowadays as most routine appendectomies are done laparascopically. Obviously a lot less down time.

Nathan J. (Illinois)

What's the latest on Cliff Lee? Should we still expect a return around the first week of July, or should we just figure after the All-Star break?

stephania bell
  (3:15 PM)

Nathan: I would plan on after the ASB. He could beat it but I wouldn't count on it.They have been clear all along that they won't push him and he is just starting to throw off a mound after nearly a month off.

Michael (Oregon)

I saw my question appear in the chat and that's when the plug was pulled! Glad you have better connection today. Re Taijuan Walker: When can we see him back in the rotation? McClendon said he wanted his pitch count up, but he reached 95 or so pitches over the weekend, including taking a no-hitter into the 7th inning. Still concerns over the shoulder?

stephania bell
  (3:20 PM)

Michael: Thanks for coming back! I don't think the concerns are as much over the shoulder at this point as they are the inconsistency. His last outing was his best in a while but they may want to see both how his shoulder responds after that and whether they can see strong performances back to back. It feels like it's not that far away. But clearly they're invested in him having a successful major league presence. Reading the tea leaves, I'm thinking it could come within the next week to ten days.

Brandon (Simi Valley, CA)

Should I be worried about Hanleys ring finer contusion? Think he plays tonight?

stephania bell
  (3:23 PM)

Brandon: Don't think he plays tonight. Might miss a day or two. But suspect they just want to see how it responds to swelling overnight. Suppose today remains a possibility but I wouldn't want to count on him.

Jimbo (NC)

Wil Myers...any reason for optimism after he returns? I'm thinking his wrist injury will prevent any power and that he won't be a productive fantasy player until 2015.

stephania bell
  (3:26 PM)

Jimbo: I think he could get it back - power, that is - as he returns, but it may take a while. The long time in the cast will lead to some atrophy, probably stiffness...just being able to grip/swing properly could takesome time. It's more likely to be a gradual thing which would make me want to wait.

Dylan (Madison, WI)

Keeper question. Dez as a 3rd rounder, Cam in the 4th or Jordy in the 6th?

stephania bell
  (3:27 PM)

Dylan: Jordy. Value. Probably 2-3 solid years with Rodgers. Some injury history but again, value.

Matt (New York)

Aside from shaking off rust, is there any reason why CarGo won't be back to his normal self when he returns?

stephania bell
  (3:31 PM)

Matt: I'm not sure we know. One of the things it's hard to assess without seeing him is just how much tissue had to be removed and how complicated dissecting out the tumor was. That could mean increased healing time (if it was extensive) and it could be uncomfortable for a bit. I'm sure the medical staff will be able to provide him with some good protection of that finger but depending on what he feels, it could affect his grip and therefore his production, at the start. I'm curious to see how well he does when he starts taking swings.

Frank (New York)

How's the FSTA conference? Is Fanduel there?

stephania bell
  (3:33 PM)

Frank: It's excellent. Just spoke with Adam Wainwright's brother who oversees a multi-team league of athletes (baseball players) who play fantasy football with fans. Great concept and great to see athletes from one sport all in on fantasy in another sport.

Paul (working at the library)

Figured Pomeranz did something stupid when he went on the DL with a fractured hand right after his horrible start. What is the time table on his return and just how effective will he be? Droppable so I can grab Jimmy Nelson?

stephania bell
  (3:36 PM)

Paul: Yep, even he said it was stupid. Figure 4-6 weeks for fracture healing and some additional time to return to pitching form, hopefully better form than what he was showing when he inflicted the injury on himself. Droppable.

Michael (Cleveland)

Do you think Harper will meet his manager's timetable of July 1 to return?

stephania bell
  (3:39 PM)

Michael: No. My guess will be that it will be off by a few days, at least. Still think it could be after ASB but depends how confortable he is swinging the bat. Should see more evidence by the end of this week as he's now hitting soft toss 2-handed.

stephania bell
  (3:40 PM)

Time to run for today...but thanks to those who stopped back by and added in a few questions we couldn't get to yesterday, Have a great 2 weeks and I'll be back chatting with you then.
