Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (1:00 PM)

It's the fastest hour in golf! Tiger's back. I gotta know what your REALISTIC expectations are for Tiger this week and at the Open Championship? How did you like the back to back U.S. Open's at Pinehurst? You have questions... I have the phone number to a guy with answers (haha). BRING IT!!!

Wally (Portland)

Good to have you back MC! Old news by now, but that finish by your boy Streelman was incredible. I bet the leaders were wondering where he even came from at the end there, since he probably wasn't on their radar until mid-way through his birdie run. Let him know he has a growing contingent of fans from the MC chat groupies!

Michael Collins
  (1:01 PM)

Great to be back. I sent Kevin and AJ a text message Sunday night and they both hit me back Monday night. Couldn't be happier for them!

Bobby (Hartford)

Thoughts on Streelman's amazing finish at the Travelers? Have you ever attended that event?

Michael Collins
  (1:02 PM)

Caddied it many times, played in the pro-am, and covered it for SiriusXM radio. It's one of my favorite events on tour now.

Al (Pensacola)

Good afternoon MC. Thanks for taking the time. Nice round on #2!! Tiger wasn't sharp on Thursday but did rally a bit. Any word on if he's playing Greenbrier next week?

Michael Collins
  (1:04 PM)

I haven't heard any reports that he would play, only reports saying he won't play next week.

Bob (Miami)

MC, what did you shoot at pinehurst

Wally (Portland)

MC, what did you end up shooting at Pinehurst? Was that one of the better golf experiences of your illustrious career?

Michael Collins
  (1:07 PM)

I shot 86 and only hit two GIR's! But made birdie on 17th with a putt like Michelle Wie (same line but longer). One of my fav's happened at Pinehurst. '05 caddying for Omar Uresti played as a single Saturday morning and I grabbed the mic and made the crowd laugh right before O pumped his drive right down the middle. Guys remembered it this year when they saw me.

Bill (NYC)

Mike, if Tiger plays mediocre over the next 3 months, a few missed cuts, etc and doesn't make the FedEx cup, does Tom Watson still put him on the Ryder Cup team?

Michael Collins
  (1:08 PM)

I honestly hope not. But I'm afraid he probably would. He's said as much.

Griffin (NY)

Hey Michael, does it bother other players that Tiger hosts QLN this week and can have input on tee times, course set, and other elements of the tournament? Or is everybody ok with it due to all that he has accomplished.

Michael Collins
  (1:10 PM)

Why would you think he input on all that stuff and more? The course is set up by the PGA Tour, as are the tee times. What other elements are you talking about, or do you think Tiger has super powers to control weather?

john (new haven, ct)

Does Martin Kaymer have a chance to win the Open or the PGA? If so, where is his better chance?

Michael Collins
  (1:11 PM)

I think his best chance will be at Vahalla and the PGA Championship. The Open is too weather/tee time dependent to make a solid bet.

Quinn (St. Louis)

Mc, what do u think of USA's chances in the knockout stage(World Cup) . Can they win it all

Michael Collins
  (1:15 PM)

I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN!!Seriously, I think if they get past Belgium they have a chance to win.

Dan (CA)

I wondered this for a long time but thought to ask....Why aren't caddies allowed to use pull/push carts? Is it a tradition thing? Is it something caddies even care about, or do they like it the way it is?

Michael Collins
  (1:16 PM)

On the European Tour they are permitted to be used. The main reason I think they aren't used on the PGA Tour is because the walks between greens and tees are sometimes in places even a pull cart can't go.

East Coast Putter (All Over)

Less wind. Tougher pins. it's a wash, per Tiger Tracker. Any idea how he appears today?

Michael Collins
  (1:18 PM)

I haven't seen his warm up, but Farrell Evans will be following him and tweeting on our pages live blog about it. http://espn.go.com/golf/blog/_/name/golf/id/11144876/hole-hole-analysis-tiger-second-round-quicken-loans-national-golf

John (Kansas City)

Mc, Is Congressional playing like a us open . What do you think is gonna be winning score?

Michael Collins
  (1:21 PM)

Def not playing like the U.S. Open, yesterday played tough because of the wind, scores are better today. Expect between -9 and -11 to win unless they get rain.

Curtis Behnke (Virginia)

Do you think that Tiger's presence affected Jason Day and Speith? And how tough is Congressional playing?

Michael Collins
  (1:23 PM)

Spieth normally plays much better when he gets paired with the biggest guys. He dominated Tiger and Phil both times I saw him play in their group. Don't know what the issue is with him. Day I couldn't say but I don't think he's intimidated.

Nate (PDX)

Are you an interlocking or overlapping grip guy?

Michael Collins
  (1:23 PM)

Interlocking, always have

Harry (Columbia)

MC, do you only do Golfcasts in the majors? When is the next one?

Michael Collins
  (1:23 PM)

Yes, next one is for the Open Championship in Liverpool.

mike (So Dak)

realistic expectations for Tiger -2?

Michael Collins
  (1:25 PM)

He'll need it if he's gonna make the cut. And I thought he had ZERO chance of that starting the week, now I'm waivering

FloridaJack (Seminole, FL)

For me the jury is still out on #2. I'd like to see it in 5 yrs. For now it looks like my neighbors backyard...sand and tall grass !!!

Michael Collins
  (1:26 PM)

It's gonna look the same in 5 years, the only difference will be the greens will have bermuda grass instead of bent.

Patrick (Orlando)

Mc, What do you think of Royal Liverpool as a british open host. I've heard players dont like that course alot.

Michael Collins
  (1:27 PM)

This will be my first visit to this course, but I remember when Tiger won there it was REALLY firm and fast. Don't know if it will be that way this time.

East Coast Putter (All Over)

Welcome back! Couple of dark clouds out there mentioned. Chances for rain or T-storm delay today?

Michael Collins
  (1:28 PM)

30% chance of thunderstorms starting at 2 pm

James (England) [via mobile]

I played a tournament today and was -1 par 5s -1 par 3s and +4 par 4s...any advice as why this could be?

Michael Collins
  (1:29 PM)

Mid to long irons need some work probably but that's with very little info and stats on your round.

George Bryan [via mobile]

Would you ever consider caddying in one of the Bryan Bros trick shot videos?

Michael Collins
  (1:30 PM)

Would LOVE to. Email me if you're serious, ESPNCaddie@gmail.com

Tommy (Texas)

Since you are an ex caddy, could you please fill us in on how a layoff with a hurt player can affect his caddy, as in the case of Joe LaCava. I know that he obviously has a great gig on tour, but what options would a looper have if his man is out for the seasonThanks for the Chats!

Michael Collins
  (1:34 PM)

Well Joe may be on salary so he'd get a check regardless. That was one of the things that split Steve and Tiger when he caddied for Adam while Tiger was hurt. For Joe, because he knows the courses, the hardest part will be knowing Tiger's yardages for each club.

FloridaJack (Seminole, FL)

Does Tiger make or miss the cut? Your guess?

Michael Collins
  (1:35 PM)

My gut says miss.

Bubba (Watson)

Can I win the open championship this year. What are my chances at Liverpool?

Michael Collins
  (1:36 PM)

Too dependent on weather to guess right now.

Ed (West Virginia)

Michael, thanks for taking my question. As a huge Tiger fan with tickets to the Greenbrier next week, could you speculate on the chance he plays? What if he misses the cut this weekend? Would he want the final tune up before the British Open? Thanks!

Michael Collins
  (1:42 PM)

I really don't think he plays next week no matter what happens this week.

zachattack (Iowa)

Someone said yesterday they thought Spieth looked nervous playing with Tiger. Do you believe that?

Michael Collins
  (1:43 PM)

Not at all. Spieth loves those type of moments.

Dan (CA)

Watched a LPGA tournament for the first time in forever last weekend. Loved how after Wei sank her putt fellow competitors sprayed champagne on her offered congrats. Is that usual in womens golf? Never really see things like that in sports.

Michael Collins
  (1:48 PM)

Actually they do that alot on the LPGA Tour... didn't work on the PGA tour, trainer got hurt being tackled by security when he tried.

Eirc (Ohio)

i have agreed with you in past chats that Tiger needs to lose some muscle, so what do you make of his comments that its because of his body that hes made a quick recovery? i dont think hes ever going to lose muscle.

Michael Collins
  (1:51 PM)

It's the TONE of the muscle, not the AMOUNT. He's in amazing shape and he'd recover just as well with less muscle mass. But that's like telling a bodybuilder they're too big, they don't wanna hear it.

Gus (Boston)

Based on twitter, Bubba Watson has been spending A LOT of time lately at the Greenbrier. Does he own a share in the resort or does he just like to spend a month of vacation at the same spot?

Michael Collins
  (1:52 PM)

He has a house there.

Michael Collins
  (1:53 PM)

3 holes, 3 pars so far from Tiger

Tom (Columbus)

MC I'm not a Tiger fan at all as i find myself rooting against him, but I do feel kinda bad for him. The expectations people have on him are mind blowing. Look at this week, some are on the golf channel actually said he would contend this week!!!? Or when he wins 5 times and some say its not enough. Is it possible his greatness is both underated and overblown?

Michael Collins
  (1:55 PM)

Admire your honesty, and yes, Tiger's greatness is both. Some because of his admission of majors being the measure of his greatness, and some because of the media's need to keep him in the spotlight because of the numbers he drives.

Greg (South Bend, IN.)

Hey MC, Tigers doing better than I would do and I didn't have back surgery.

Michael Collins
  (1:55 PM)

Me too!

Andrew (WI)

Pinehurst identified the Players Champ as the best men's golfer and a top 5 player in great form as the best women's golfer. I'll sign up for more Pinehurst.

Michael Collins
  (1:56 PM)

Completely agree!

Sean (Tacoma, WA)

Looking to get tickets for next year's US Open at Chambers. I've never been to a PGA event before. Should I get a practice round ticket, or go for one of the weekend days?

Michael Collins
  (1:57 PM)

Yes! Take your camera for the practice round and get autographs, then get a ticket for Saturday, then on Sunday when you're watching the course will be fresh and you'll tell everyone how different it looks on tv!

Curtis (California)

MC! I gotta know, do you type all these responses yourself? Or do you have someone do it for you and you just tell them what to type? Because if you are typing than you got some SERIOUS SPEED! lol Have an Awesome Day!

Michael Collins
  (1:57 PM)

HAHA! I'm a two finger maestro and a one man band. You have an awesome day too.

Ben (Denver, CO)

Help me Michael! I am crushing my hybrid clubs and struggle considerably with my driver. Lately I've been teeing off using my 3 hybrid. Thoughts on how to correct my situation?

Michael Collins
  (1:59 PM)

Choke down and inch on your driver and feel like you take a 3/4 swing. it'll help you get control back. Don't be afraid, if you have bad thoughts stepping in, you'll have bad results.

Michael Collins
  (2:00 PM)

Man that went too fast!! I'll be back Monday and we can chat about what happened this weekend! Same Bat Time Same Bat Channel. Play well everyone. Your caddie, MC
