Messier is nearing No. 2 on the NHL's all-time point leaders list.
A race for second place is on. New York Rangers center Mark Messier is one point shy of tying Gordie Howe for second place on the NHL's all-time scoring list with 1,850 points. With his next goal or assist, Messier will align himself with Mr. Hockey. Messier's former Edmonton teammate Wayne Gretzky comfortably holds the record with 2,857 points.

This got SportsNation thinking about those silver second places.

In many instances -- like this one -- the No. 1 slot is far out of reach, but No. 2 is attainable and still sought after.
