Rank 'Em: First Basemen

Is Albert Pujols the best first baseman in baseball?

Would the Phillies really think they had a shot of trading Ryan Howard for the Cardinals' Albert Pujols? Would the Cardinals even listen? It doesn't look like it. But it raises an interesting debate about the position and the depth of talent it showcases.

First base has been a bit devalued in recent years, as conventional wisdom has it as perhaps the least valuable defensive position. The position has long been a place to stick your best hitter -- but only if he's your worst defender. Still, players like Albert Pujols and Mark Teixeira have shown that first base can be the domain of skilled defenders and all-around excellent players as well.
