LONDON -- Mark Philippoussis's comeback from a
knee injury has been further delayed and he is likely to miss
next week's Cincinnati Masters, a Tennis Australia spokesman
said Wednesday.
Philippoussis, who had knee surgery four months ago, is
missing from this week's Montreal Masters and his goal now is
to be 100 percent fit for the U.S. Open, starting Aug. 27.
"The (knee) operation was for a bit of a cartilage tear.
There was no ligament damage so it wasn't that serious," the
player's manager John McCurdy said.
"He had some bone fragments taken out and, after the
operation, he had some synthetic substances injected -- two or
three of them -- to help.
"So there's a few little things that have caused the delay
(in his comeback). He was home before Wimbledon and I spoke to
Mark. He's positive. He still believes his best years of tennis
are in front of him."
Philippoussis, U.S. Open finalist in 1998, is training with
coach Peter McNamara at his new Delray Beach home after moving
from Palm Island, Miami.
