World Doubles canceled amid security worries

Associated Press

NEW DELHI, India -- Security worries have forced organizers to cancel the World Doubles tennis championship next month in Bangalore.

"It's become a victim of the apprehension about security," Anil Khanna, secretary of the All India Tennis Association, said Thursday.

Concerns over security since the attacks Sept. 11 on the United States have forced cancellation of several sports events in India and Pakistan. Two weeks ago, tournament's organizers sought only a postponement from the ATP of the $750,000 event.

Khanna said there was always a lingering doubt that some players might be reluctant to visit the subcontinent even though the ATP considered India a safe place and gave its go-ahead for the tournament.

"I wish we had a chance to put the players' doubts to rest and make them realize that India is a safe venue," he said. "But I don't see how the tournament can get a fresh start at this juncture."
