MELBOURNE, Australia -- Thomas Johansson's victory at the Australian Open put him atop the ATP Champions Race, while Lleyton Hewitt and Jennifer Capriati held their No. 1 rankings.

The 200 points Johansson earned by beating Marat Safin in the Australian Open final Sunday give the Swede 209 in the 2002 ATP Champions Race. Safin is second with 143, followed by Australian Open semifinalists Jiri Novak (117) and Tommy Haas (90).

Roger Federer, Tim Henman, Younes El Aynaoui (all with 65), Jonas Bjorkman (63), former No. 1 Marcelo Rios (59), and Greg Rusedski (58) fill out the rest of the leading 10 in the standings that run from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31.

The ATP and WTA rankings, which are used for seedings at tournaments, are based on performances over the preceding 52 weeks.

So Hewitt will keep the No. 1 position he gained by winning the U.S. Open and the Masters Cup last year, and Gustavo Kuerten will stay at No. 2, even though both lost in the first round at the Australian Open.

Juan Carlos Ferrero is No. 3, followed by Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

Tommy Haas, a semifinalist at the Australian Open, moved into the top five for the first time, while Johansson is 10th.

Andre Agassi, who dropped out of the Australian Open with a wrist injury before the tournament started, is No. 6, followed by Safin, Patrick Rafter, and Sebastien Grosjean.

The WTA's top 10 changed very little from last week.

Australian Open champion Jennifer Capriati retained the No. 1 ranking she gained this month when Lindsay Davenport missed tournaments because of knee surgery.

Davenport is No. 2, followed by Venus Williams, Australian Open runner-up Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams.

No. 7 Justine Henin and No. 8 Amelie Mauresmo both moved ahead of No. 9 Jelena Dokic, while Monica Seles remained No. 10.
