ROME -- Martina Hingis is recovering from a left food strain, while Monica Seles has a stomach virus.

As a result, both withdrew from the Italian Open.

"I've spent the past week resting my foot and will meet with my doctor in the next couple of days to speak about my progress, " said Hingis. I just need to rest and look ahead to Roland Garros. "I am obviously disappointed to be missing Rome this week. It's a great tournament, a wonderful city and I love playing there. "

Seles also most last year's Italian Open. The culprit was a foot injury. Seles won the title in 2000.

"I'm really disappointed I won't be able to make it to Rome this year," said Seles. "It's such a wonderful city and I was looking forward to the Italian Open after missing it last year through injury.

"I've had some great matches in Rome and I have a lot of good memories from over the years, especially winning the title again two years ago. I'm confident of being ready and fully fit for Roland Garros."
