Philippoussis triumphs at Queens Club

Associated Press

LONDON -- Mark Philippoussis beat sixth-seeded Greg Rusedski 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) Tuesday to advance to the third round of the Queens Club.

Philippoussis, making a comeback from a serious knee injury, saved two break points in the first game of the second set, two more at 1-all and another at 3-3.

Rusedski, playing his first match in five weeks after sustaining a neck injury, failed to capitalize on a break point at 2-1 in the third set, and then held off two break points at 2-2 as the match moved toward a third tiebreaker.

"I dominated for three sets and it was just one or two points at the end,'' Rusedski said. "I must have had six or seven break points and he served extremely well. I can't really be disappointed because I did everything I possibly could out there.''

Philippoussis won consecutive matches for the first time since reaching the final of the Adelaide in early January.

"I came up with some good serves, and I think some good volleys too on those break points,'' Philippoussis said. "It was an important match for me to get through. It just came down to a point here and there.''

In other matches, American Todd Martin, seeded ninth, recovered from a break of serve in the final set to beat Paraguay's Ramon Delgado 6-2, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (6); and qualifier Mike Bryan defeated France's Cedric Pioline 6-4, 6-4.

Mardy Fish, an American qualifier, beat Andre Sa of Brazil 6-3, 6-4. He will face top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt in the next round.

Jan-Michael Gambill beat Michael Chang 7-5, 6-3, and eighth-seeded Xavier Malisse defeated American Cecil Mamiit 6-4, 6-0.

Neville Godwin of South Africa defeated French Open junior champion Richard Gasquet 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-3. Gasquet was playing his first match on grass.
