Thursday, Jan. 13 2:57am ET No. 2 Norman advances, two seeds fall at Heineken Open AUCKLAND, New Zealand (Ticker) -- Second-seeded Magnus Norman of Sweden advanced to the semifinals of the $350,000 Heineken Open today while No. 6 Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands and No. 7 Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain were upset. Norman still has not lost a set in the tournament after topping Marc Rosset of Switzerland, 6-2, 6-2, in today's quarterfinal. Norman, who last season tied Americans Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras for the lead in ATP Tour titles with five, has dropped more than three games in just one set this week. In the semifinals, Norman will face Gaston Gaudio of Argentina, who upended Schalken, 6-1, 6-2. Gaudio has defeated two seeded players to advance to his first semifinal. Ferrero, the youngest player remaining in the draw one month shy of his 20th birthday, fell to countryman Juan Balcells, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Balcells was a qualifier and also upset top seed Tommy Haas. In the most intriging match heading into the day, 1994 champion Magnus Gustafsson of Sweden was forced to retire against American Michael Chang, 5-7, 6-3, 0-1. Following a 59-minute rain delay, Gustafsson injured his right knee and could not continue, sending Chang to the semifinals against Balcells. This tournament, which serves as a tuneup for the Australian Open, offers a first prize of $46,000.
