  • At the French Open, she became the first Belgian player to reach a Grand Slam singles final. She fell to world No. 4 Jennifer Capriati 1-6, 6-4, 12- 10 in the longest third set of a French Open women's final. Previously, she had never gone past the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament.

  • Helped lead Belgium to Fed Cup victory over Russia in the final after the United States withdrew from the tournament due to terrorist concerns.

  • Won her first title of the year at Stanford by defeating Lindsay Davenport, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1. Defeated Magdalena Maleeva, 6-1, 6-1 to win the title in Leipzig. Won her last title of the year in Luxembourg by beating Lisa Raymond, 6-2, 6-2.
