At the French Open, she became the first Belgian player to reach a
Grand Slam singles final. She fell to world No. 4 Jennifer Capriati 1-6, 6-4, 12-
10 in the longest third set of a French Open women's final. Previously, she had never gone past the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament.
Helped lead Belgium to Fed Cup victory over Russia in the final after the United States withdrew from the tournament due to terrorist concerns.
Won her first title of the year at Stanford by defeating Lindsay Davenport, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1. Defeated Magdalena Maleeva, 6-1, 6-1 to win the title in Leipzig. Won her last title of the year in Luxembourg by beating Lisa Raymond, 6-2, 6-2.
Reached the finals at Indian Wells before losing to Serena Williams 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Also reached the final at 's-Hertogenbosch before falling to compatriot Justine Henin 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

Won titles at Hobart and Filderstadt.
Reached the mixed doubles final with Lleyton Hewitt at Wimbledon.

As a qualifier, won her first career tournament in Luxembourg. Almost had back-to-back victories when she advanced to the final at Bratislava, but she lost to Amelie Mauresmo.
