  • Became Russia's No. 1 player after she reached the semifinals at Miami after Lindsay Davenport retired with an injury. Also cracked the top 10 for the first time with a career-high rank of No. 8.

  • Reached the final at Acapulco before falling to Amanda Coetzer 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. Made it to the final in Moscow but lost to Jelena Dokic.

  • Became Russia's first tennis medalist as the Olympic silver medalist in Sydney, Australia.
