Became Russia's No. 1 player after she reached the semifinals at Miami after Lindsay Davenport retired with an injury. Also cracked the top 10 for the first time with a career-high rank of No. 8.
Reached the final at Acapulco before falling to Amanda Coetzer 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. Made it to the final in Moscow but lost to Jelena Dokic.
2000
Reached the semifinals at the U.S. Open
Became Russia's first tennis medalist as the Olympic silver medalist in Sydney, Australia.
Qualified for the year-ending Chase Championships, ousting defending champion Lindsay Davenport in the first round -- only the second time in the event's history that the defending champ went out so early. Advanced to the semifinals by defeating Kim Clijsters.
Selected the Sanex WTA Tour Most Improved Player.
1999
Scored Russia's only point in the Fed Cup final against the United States, rallying from a 1-4 third-set deficit to defeat No. 3 Venus Williams.
