  • After losing three finals to Venus Williams (Gold Coast, Antwerp and Amelia Island), defeated Serena Williams 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (5) to win her first title of the year at the German Open.

  • In a rematch with Serena Williams the next week lost the Italian Open final.

    2001

  • Started off the year with back-to-back victories at the Gold Coast and Canberra becoming the first player since Pam Shriver in 1988 to win two consecutive tournaments before the year's opening Grand Slam.

  • Reached the fourth-round at the Australian Open before falling to No. 4 Monica Seles in three sets. Also advanced to the fourth round at the U.S. Open before falling to eventual runner-up Serena Williams.

  • Reached her first Grand Slam semifinal at the French Open where she lost to compatriot Kim Clijsters in three sets. Afterward she entered the world's Top 10 rankings at No. 9, along with Clijsters, making it the first time two Belgians were ranked simultaneously in the Top 10.

  • Avenged her French Open loss in the final at 's-Hertogenbosch by defeating Kim Clijsters, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

  • Ended No. 4 Jennifer Capriati's bid for a third consecutive Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in the semifinals to become the first Belgian woman or man to reach the Wimbledon final. She lost to No. 2 Venus Williams 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.

  • Helped lead Belgium to its first Fed Cup title by winning all four of her singles matches in the final against Russia.

    2000

  • Suffered nagging injuries throughout the year. She withdrew from Antwerp and the French Open due to a continuing arm injury. Retired in Filderstadt and withdrew from Quebec City due to a right foot injury.
