OSAKA, Japan -- Eighth-seeded Christina McHale of the United States lost in the first round of the Japan Open on Monday, beaten by Thai veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-3, 7-5.
Second-seeded Marion Bartoli of France and seventh-seeded Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa had no trouble advancing.
Bartoli, ranked No. 11, was broken once in the first set in defeating Melinda Czink of Hungary 6-2, 6-2. Scheepers beat Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia 6-2, 6-2.
Two other Americans were eliminated -- Coco Vandeweghe and Irina Falconi. Misaki Doi of Japan downed Vandeweghe 6-4, 6-4, and Mathilde Johansson of France ousted Falconi 6-3, 6-2.
Also, Eleni Daniilidou of Greece defeated Anastasia Pivovarova of Russia 6-2, 6-2.
