The 27-year old Almagro, who was given a wild-card entry into the tournament, advanced after earning the only break of the match in the first set.
He will next face former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt of Australia, who beat Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-4 in a match where both players struggled to hold serve. Nieminen finished with more breaks -- six to five -- but Hewitt had three in the decider.
