HISTORY:

Look for a mix of old and new at the new Yankee Stadium, which seats nearly 6,600 fewer fans than The House That Ruth Built. As explained by MLB.com reporter Anthony DiComo for the Yankees' Web site, "[Chief operating officer Lonn] Trost, his team of Yankees executives and the HOK Sport global architecture firm examined every detail of the old Yankee Stadium, replicating all that they could. Many of its signature features, such as Monument Park and the decorative frieze, were easy to snap into place. And what the Yankees hoped was that in doing so, they would be able to transfer some of the more intangible aspects of the old stadium -- 'the ghosts,' so to speak -- along with them." Oh, and one BIG benefit of the new stadium: cup holders at every seat in the general bowl, where there were none at the old joint. Not only that: The ratio of rest rooms to fans is now 1 to 60; it was 1 to 89 previously. Also, there are 16 elevators in the house; only three ran in the original stadium. The facility replaces the original Yankee Stadium, which opened its doors in April 1923 and would be known from that point on as The House That Ruth Built, because it was recognized that the drawing power of Ruth (purchased from the Red Sox in December 1919) made the stadium possible.

Soak up the scene:

In many ways the new Yankee Stadium resembles the original stadium more than the place they just moved out of, which underwent a massive renovation in the 1970s. The famous roof overhang and other touches have returned, and for fans that's a positive development. They'd really like to see the team start stockpiling championships, too. • Cafe Seats are located in the rear of the section indicated in the ticket listing. Cafe style seats are only available for select Field Level sections.
• Standing Room Only (SRO) areas are located in the rear of the section indicated in the ticket listing. No seating is available in these sections.
• Terrace WC seating is located in the rear of Jim Beam Suite sections 317-323. These sections offer wheelchair seating, but do not provide club access to ticket holders.

Kids:

Children measuring less than 30 inches, who can walk freely under the turnstile or are carried into the stadium, do not require a ticket to enter. The child must sit on an adult's lap during the game, without obstructing the view of any other guests.

General:

No backpacks, briefcases, attaché cases, coolers, glass or plastic bottles, cans, large purses, bags or video cameras are permitted. No laptop computers are allowed. There is no claim checking available. Diaper bags, small children's backpacks, small women's purses and backpack purses will be permitted after they are inspected. Re-entry is not permitted. Only vehicles dropping off or picking up disabled guests can park at the curb. Smoking is completely prohibited.

Additional Information:

There is easy access available for guests with disabilities to the following: restrooms, suites, ticket windows, drinking fountains, telephones, concessions counters and seating areas. Assistive listening devices are available at no charge in the stadium lobby, which is located on the Field level at Section 2, with identification required as a deposit. There are electrical outlets available to recharge wheelchairs and other medical equipment.

For directions from Manhattan: From the East Side, take FDR Drive North to Exit 18 (Willis Ave. Bridge). Cross bridge and follow signs for the Major Deegan Expressway/Interstate 87 North to Exit 4 (149th street) or Exit 5 (155th Street). From the West Side, take Henry Hudson Parkway North to Exit 14 Cross Bronx Expressway/Interstate 95 North. Follow 1-95 North to Exit 1C (Major Deegan Expressway Exit) South to Exit 6 (161st Street). For directions from Brooklyn and Queens: Take the Brooklyn/Queens Expressway (Interstate 278) to the Grand Central Parkway west to the Triboro Bridge. Once over the bridge, follow signs to the Major Deegan Expressway (Interstate 87) north and proceed to Exit 4 (149th Street) or Exit 5 (155th Street Exit). For directions from Staten Island: From the Verrazano Bridge cross over the bridge and follow the Brooklyn/Queens Expressway (Interstate 278) to the Grand Central Parkway. Go West to the Triboro Bridge. Once over the bridge follow signs to the Major Deegan Expressway (Interstate 87) north and proceed to Exit 4 (149th Street) or Exit 5 (155th Street Exit). From the Goethals Bridge: Cross the bridge and follow the New Jersey Turnpike (Interstate 95) north to the George Washington Bridge. Cross bridge and take Exit 1C to the Major Deegan (Interstate 87) south to Exit 6 (161st Street Exit). For directions from Long Island: From the Throgs Neck or Whitestone Bridge take either bridge to the Cross-Bronx Expressway (Interstate 95) South. Follow to Exit 1C the Major Deegan/Interstate 87 South Exit. Continue on the Major Deegan to Exit 6 (161st Street). Or, from the Cross Island Parkway, proceed North to the Grand Central Parkway West to the Triboro Bridge. Once over the bridge follow signs to the Major Deegan Expressway (Interstate 87) north and proceed to Exit 4 (149th Street) or Exit 5 (155th Street Exit). For directions from Westchester County and Points North: Take the Bronx River or Hutchinson River Parkway South to Bruckner Expressway (Interstate 278) West to the Major Deegan (Interstate 87) North. Continue on the Major Deegan to Exit 4 (149th Street) or Exit 5 (155th Street). Or, from the Major Deegan (Interstate 87) South, follow to Exit 6 (161st Street). For directions from New Jersey: Take the George Washington Bridge to the Cross-Bronx Expressway to the Major Deegan (Interstate 87) South, Exit 1C. Continue on the Major Deegan to Exit 6 (161st). Or, take the George Washington Bridge to the Cross Bronx Expressway to Exit 2, Jerome Avenue South. Or, take the George Washington Bridge to Harlem River Drive to the 155th Street exit. Cross the Macombs Dam Bridge and follow signs to the stadium. For directions from Connecticut: Take Interstate 95 South to the Major Deegan Expressway (Interstate 87) South. Continue on the Major Deegan to Exit 6 (161st Street). Or, take Interstate 95 South to the Bruckner Expressway (Interstate 278) West. Follow the Bruckner Expressway to the Major Deegan (Interstate 87) North. Take Exit 4 (149th Street) or Exit 5 (155th Street). Or, take the Merritt Parkway South to Hutchinson River Parkway South. Follow to Cross County Parkway West to NY State Thruway (Interstate 87) South. Thruway becomes Major Deegan Expressway (Interstate 87 Still). Follow to exit 6 (161st Street).

Transportation:

SUBWAY: The Yankee Stadium Subway stop is located right outside the stadium at the corner of 161st Street and River Avenue. The stadium is conveniently reached by several subway lines, and a trip from midtown Manhattan takes less than 25 minutes. The No. 4 train, as well as the B (weekdays only) and D trains, make stops at 161st Street/Yankee Stadium. Metro North train service to Connecticut and Westchester County is available at the 125th Street subway stop. BUSES: Several New York Transit Authority Bus Lines provide convenient service to Yankee Stadium. The BX 6, BX 13 and BX 55 buses stop at 161st Street/Grand Concourse, a short walk from the stadium. If you or your group travel to Yankee Stadium in a private bus, parking is located at 164th and 165th Streets and River Avenue. Police will direct you to that area. The fee is $30; cash only upon arrival.
