History: The $115 million, state-of-the-art, open-air football facility was the first of its kind to be constructed entirely with private funds. On Aug. 26, 1996, Pro Player, the sports-apparel brand of Fruit of the Loom, sponsored the renaming of Joe Robbie Stadium as Pro Player Stadium. The name was changed from Pro Player Stadium to Dolphins Stadium on Jan. 9, 2005, and on April 28, 2006, to Dolphin Stadium. The custom-built professional football stadium underwent renovations in 1999 to accommodate Major League Baseball. Renovations include retractable seating on the north side of the stadium, new baseball dugouts, 660 additional lights for suitable night play and an electric disappearing pitcher's mound. The stadium has played host to the Super Bowl, World Series, Orange Bowl and BCS National Championship Game. Land Shark Stadium is equipped with a turf system that provides drainage for its natural grass. The stadium also features a synthetic warning-track designed to absorb water. In 2007, a $250 million improvements and innovations project was completed, adding 360,000 square feet to the facility, leading-edge technology and other amenities.
Soak up the scene:
The Marlins may play here, but to call this place a ballpark would be a misnomer. Just look at the name and the address on Dan Marino Boulevard. This is a football stadium, and empty seats almost always outnumber full ones when the Marlins play. But the team has made some history here in its brief tenure, winning two world titles.
