In the southeastern end of the Roaring Fork Valley, Aspen is 220 miles southwest of Denver and 130 miles southeast of Grand Junction. Highway 82 is the major roadway leading into and out of Aspen via I-70 at Glenwood Springs to the north and 12,000-foot-plus Independence Pass to the south.
Beginnings: More than a century ago, silver prospectors came to the upper valley of the Roaring Fork River, entering a favorite summer hunting ground of the Ute Indian, to discover one of the richest silver lodes in the world. In a few years, Aspen's mines would produce nearly $100 million of silver ore. Aspen was founded in 1880. The first ski runs were developed in the late 1930s, and by the 1940s and 1950s Aspen was an enclave of high quality art, science and culture.
The Fourteeners: The Elk, Collegiate and Gore ranges of the Rockies are in Aspen's backyard and seven of Colorado's 54 "Fourteeners" (peaks higher than 14,000 feet) are located in the Elk Mountain range alone. The six closest to the Aspen area are: Capitol Peak, Castle Peak, Pyramid Peak, Maroon Peak, North Maroon Peak and Snowmass Mountain.
