Senn takes his skating in stride

SAN FRANCISCO -- When Chris Senn showed up for the skateboard street practice on Sunday afternoon on Pier 30 in San Francisco, he made full use of the five-hour time block set aside by event organizers.

He showed up at 11:59 for the noon practice session and skated virtually non-stop before packing up his board shortly after 5 p.m.

Chris Senn has two gold medals in street competition.

He downplayed his afternoon session by saying, "It's not really practice, we just skate."

That seems to be the attitude of most of the street skaters Sunday. Senn is known for his dedication and attention to the technical aspects of skateboarding. Perhaps that is why he is concerned with some of the street courses he finds at events -- including the one at X Games V.

"It's just too organized," Senn says cadidly. "I mean it's still fun, but it's all just way too organized. This course is too big. Definately too big. There's not enough time to hit everything because it's so spread out. If I do hit everything, I'll be stoked."

Senn, a 26-year-old native of Grass Valley, Calif., has competed in every X Games to date and he has two gold medals in skateboard street to show for it. Senn took gold in '95 and '97, while Brazilian Rodil Araujo Jr., took the top spots in '96 and '98. This year just may break their golden tie.

But Senn won't have anything to do with that kind of talk.

"I don't even like competing," says Senn. "I like skating against everyone. I just want to have fun and that's it."

To really no surprise, Senn has no specific training routine or special diet. He just skates for fun and doesn't stress over results. But that's not to say that he isn't trying. At Sunday's practice, Senn worked all aspects of the course and had one run in particular that stood out in his mind.

"I did the kickflip over the rail, I was pretty stoked about that," says Senn when asked to find a highlight of his afternoon session. "It made me feel young again."

If doing well makes Senn feel young, he should try reading his bio sometime. He has never finished lower than third in X Games competition. He has compiled eight first-place finishes other comps the past four years.

And he just keeps riding.

But perhaps it's not so much the competition as the traveling that makes Senn feel a part of the older set. He has competed in Germany, Canada, Switzerland, and Great Britain -- not including numerous stops in the U.S. He was overjoyed to hear that X Games V would be in San Francisco. And he had good reason.

"I live here. That says it all. My ultimate desire would be for the games to stay in San Francisco until I move, and then move to the city I move to," Senn says with a huge smile.

Until then, Senn will continue practicing, or should we say just skating for fun, in preparation for another X Games.
