SAN FRANCISCO -- The X Games "Best Trick" competition Sunday night was the perfect stage for Tony Hawk to execute the ultimate skateboarding feat.
Hawk pulled off the first 900 in skateboarding competition history, turning 2½ rotations high above the halfpipe, landing with a slight touch of his right hand, and then riding the trick out clean to the wild ovation of a capacity crowd on Pier 30.
"This is the best day of my life, I swear to God" Hawk said. "I couldn't have done it without you (fans).
"This is it. This is what it all comes down to. I feel like everything (in my career) has led up to now. That's it for me, I swear. What else is there? The 900 was my goal."
The competition between five of the world's best riders was supposed to be held within a time limit. But once Hawk started going after skateboarding's Holy Grail, the event turned into a one-man quest for history.
And after Hawk pulled off the trick, his fellow competitors handed him the title -- hands down. When Andy Macdonald was asked what his best trick of the night was he said, "It doesn't even matter."
Hawk came up short on his revolutions 10 times, but was getting closer with each fall. His fellow competitors stopped doing their own variations of tricks to watch this legendary figure in their sport slowly get into a zone.

Macdonald, Bob Burnquist and Bucky Lasek repeatedly banged their boards on the ramp as Hawk kept climbing up the stairs after each failed attempt. Twice he landed on his board, only to have it slide out from under him.
The near misses just fueled his desire and finally on his 11th attempt he emerged from a twirling mass to rise up on his board and complete the trick. As the other skaters jumped to the bottom of the halfpipe, Hawk was engulfed by a sea of humanity and carried around the halfpipe.
"I saw him when he did the kickflip 540 for the first time," fellow skateboarder Neal Hendrix said. "I thought that was great. But this just blows that moment away."
"I'm just in awe. Finally, it's done," said Brian Patch.
Hawk is a five-time X Games gold medalist in vert competitions, winning two single titles in 1995 and '97 and three golds in doubles with Macdonald.
"Just standing here I feel like I can do it again and again," Hawks said. "This is the best moment of all time. I tried for a day for our video and couldn't do it."
