By Ian Votteri X Games staff The weather up here has been cold and sunny, with snow flurries predicted to hit us on Friday. The backcountry has been fun, with about a foot of snow falling last week. Although it is only accessible by snowmobile, the experienced backcountry riders have enjoyed fresh powder and some of the less difficult chutes that have started to fill in. As the end of December closes in, the base area has been transformed with scaffolding and fencing to prepare for the course designers. By the time Jan. 1 rolls around, the base area of Crested Butte will be set for the final touches to be installed for the start of the third annual Winter X Games. Late last month, a number of X Games athletes, organizers and course designers descended on the Butte to modify the courses and competition format for the benefit of the Games. Among them, Peter Line of the Forum Team, Jason Levinthal of Line Skiboards and Josh Loubek of Hart skis. Along with representatives from the other sports, the crew pounded out what they thought would improve the Games. As a result, this year's events should be that much better.
While the town of Crested Butte prepares for the Games, a
buzz has been going around about the new Free Skiing disciplines, Big Air and women's Skier X. A number of local women will
be competing in the event and should draw a good crowd on Friday during
the event. That's it for now. Pray for snow.
